I just looked at the weather forecast and the high for the next four days is 15 and a low of -6. Really? Oh, let’s not forget wind chill factor with the constant 15-20 mph winds. I live in Boston and this is the time of year when you really hate living in Boston. The snow has lost its charm and is now just annoying. The long dark nights start to make you depressed and the cold just hurts. I enjoyed this time of year when I was young and did not have to work, but now I am either to old, lazy or busy to snowboard, ski, skate or enjoy any other
outdoor activity.
Usually in January, the wife and I go sit on a beach in Mexico for two weeks to unwind and defrost. We decided that this year we should stay home and save our pennies, big mistake because now the winter seems endless. Fear not, I have found the cure to winter depression - actually three cures and they are: small batch Bourbon, rich fatty foods/meat and dark bold red wines. Keep your salad, your Pinot Grigio and your Cosmo I am having a Manhattan, Syrah and braised short ribs.
This is the time of year when cold climate people fatten up and drink up. Are you with me Chicago!?
Michel-Schlumberger Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon pair perfectly with winter, the food and the climate. They both help to put a smile on my frozen winter face. Do you have any food or drink suggestions that help you get though the long cold winter nights? Let me know your secrets. BTW, I think it’s time for me to plan a market visit to Miami.

Just finished a pan seared duck breast with wild rice and your 2004 Maison Rouge. Nice acid in the wine to counteract the richness in the duck. After one more glass of the wine we’ll finish the evening with a glass of Lagavulin single malt. Winter isn’t so bad if you have good food, very good wine and a Scotch to finish the evening.
